Tokyo confirmed 60 new cases of novel coronavirus Sunday, the metropolitan government said, the first time the number of cases hit 60 since May 4.
The figure was the third straight day it topped 50 and the highest number since the country’s COVID-19 emergency was fully lifted on May 25.
The figure pushed the cumulative total of infections in Tokyo to 6,114.
A total of 99 people tested positive for the virus across Japan on Sunday.
The figure includes 17 in the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, the highest daily counts since the country’s state of emergency was fully lifted.
The municipal government of Otaru, Hokkaido, said 14 people in their 60s to 80s tested positive for the coronavirus the same day. All are users of an eatery offering a daytime karaoke service.
Also, three new cases were found elsewhere in Hokkaido, including the prefectural capital of Sapporo.
